How to do CrossFit Butterfly Kipping Pull Ups

Welcome to Pull Ups 101. Written By Mr. Walsh, Head Coach here at CrossFit Downtown Heights. Conveniently located between Downtown Tampa and Tampa Heights neighborhood. In this article we will go over how we do pull ups, why we do them, and how to get better. We also will address how to properly start kipping your pull ups, but that ALWAYS comes after you develop the skill and strength to do a strict pull up with no assistance.

Where To Begin?

Where to begin if you have little to no experience doing pull ups. Well lucky for you, here in beautiful Tampa Florida, us CrossFitters do pull ups in our regime a good amount in our weekly training program. We have a lot of experience that can greatly help. First we test your strength to see if you can do a strict pull up, grabbing a bar and pulling your whole body up until your chin passes above the bar. If you can not, we have an array of exercise we do to build this pulling strength.

How to do CrossFit Butterfly Kipping Pull ups

Timing and coordination play a giant role when learning the more dynamic movements of the standard pull up known as the butterfly and kipping pull ups. Both come with their own degree of difficulty and understanding the difference of movement between the two is very important. These drills address body position and what it should look like at the apex of our pull right before we go into our next rep. We suggest you think of this as being the moment you are coming down once your chin has reached its highest point. These will allow you to get the pull-ups done faster, but is still subject to all the cautions we talked earlier about building up the must-have strength and flexibility in your shoulders and back before putting too much stress on your shoulders. There are hundreds of progressions of the butterfly and kipping pull ups. We do stress that having at least 5-7 strict pull ups performed with no assistance before attempting to learn either of these two movements. Thanks for reading Tampa CrossFitters.
